Together-by Ryn
Kyou grinned brightly. “Tohru, you’re going to rest today.”
The slender girl looked up, still dressed in her pajamas, her hair
a mess of knots and what she feared was a small trickle of drool
at the corner of her lips. “Nani?” she asked, turning away quickly
and trying to brush a hand through her hair. It got stuck halfway
and she flushed, “Gomen. I haven’t had time to wash up.” Kyou only
snorted and placed a tray of breakfast before the girl. “Shut up-
er, be quiet and eat!”
The redhead jumped up with a start. He was in his room, the only
thing that had changed was an assortment of pictures on his dresser
and he slept on a futon instead of the floor.
He could feel dawn approaching, the house was still quiet but he
could hear a few birds chirping outside. The sun’s light was timid
now, shadowing everything in gray, but he knew it’d be full force
sometime soon.
Tohru fingered the hem of her shirt, staring Kyou from out of
the corner of her eyes. “Whaaaat?” he growled finally, the tiny
hairs on the back of his neck standing up in annoyance. “Nothing.”
Tohru jumped, averting her gaze. “I was just thinking that Kagura-san
is a very lucky girl to have such a thoughtful person as a boy-.”
Kyou nearly clawed at his face, “Kagura?” he shrieked, “Do you know
how long I’ve been trying to find her someone else to cling to?”
Tohru raised her eyebrows in concern: “You mean-”Kyou stood, his
eyes downcast for a moment. “What can I say? She’ll be sad for a
moment and then kick my ass.”
Tohru looked wistful for a moment. “You still care for her don’t
you? You don’t want to hurt her feelings…” Kyou blanched at the
unfitting expression on the girl’s face. “D-don’t worry.” He blushed.
“Kagura is stronger than she looks and she knows we never had a
chance from the beginning…”
Tohru smiled, “I can see why she loves you so much.” Then immediately
clamped a hand over her moth and blushed furiously.
Finally, the other two occupants of the house began to stir. He
could hear their footsteps as they set to work on their daily chores.
Kyou sighed to himself and rolled out of the bed. Today was the
day.
The household had gotten used to never eating breakfast since after
the Incident. Kyou had considered cooking once in a while, but he
knew that he would never make anything as well as she did. And so
breakfast had lost its luster to the three of them.
“I’ll go get us some drinks-”Tohru started but was interrupted
as Kyou popped his head from outside the kitchen. “What did I tell
you?” he asked somewhat irritably; then addressing the other boy:
“You know where the damn drinks are. Go get them yourself.” Yuki
jumped to his feet, feeling his anger snap for once. “Don’t tell
me what to do, you sad excuse for a Souma-”
Kyou twitched – ‘Oh no…’ Tohru thought, jumping up as well. ‘Yuki
went too far!’ “It’s alright Kyou! I want to get something for Yuki.
It’s the least I could do!”
Kyou breathed heavily for a moment, but disappeared into the kitchen,
then with a great bang, reappeared with two cups of steaming tea.
“I won’t have her being a maid for you.” He glared for a moment,
and then sniffed, turning around and stomping out the front door.
And for some reason, Tohru couldn’t stop from smiling.
Kyou styled his hair as usual, running a comb through it until it
no longer stood in clumps. As a cat, it was his one vanity and to
luckily it was very easy to tame. He knew that couldn’t be said
for some of the other Soumas, so he allowed himself one smirk at
his reflection.
He had put on the tuxedo Shigure had bought for him. Today was a
special day. He pulled on his shoes, and stared at the floor for
a moment: lost in thought.
Kyou leaned in slowly, his eyes closed tightly. He was too afraid
to look at her right now; he was giving her something he’d never
given anyone before. She held it all in her hand at that moment,
everything Kyou lived for, everything he had. He pressed his lips
against hers, softly, the barest of touches but also the sweetest.
He pulled back finally, gathering the courage to look into Tohru’s
eyes. She stared back at him, two spots of pink appearing along
her cheekbones. “Kyou,” she whispered, her hand grabbing his. And
that time, they both met in the middle.
“Tohru,” Kyou said, stepping up to his dresser. There stood a picture
of Tohru smiling brightly, her head tilted jokingly to the side
as she brandished a feather duster at the camera. “It’s time for
our graduation.”
He placed the picture in his pocket, right next to his heart.
“It was hard, but we finally made it, Tohru.”
