SUMMARY for Chapter 57 (published in Hana to Yume #10 2002)

Hatori had just walked into Mayuko's parents' bookshop and
says, "It's been a long time." Mayuko is shocked to see him. "It's
been 2 years." "No, I guess it's been more than 2 years." He
glances around and notices nothing has changed with the store or
her. Mayuko is surprised, but she returns with a comment of, "Seeing
you in that suit makes me hot." She tells him she thought she was
daydreaming since she had just been talking to Shigure as she
remembers him talking about Hatori's new girlfriend, who resembles a
little of Kana. Hatori tells her he's there to pick up a book
Shigure had placed on order for him. She is upset that Shigure had
kept that little part of information from her and quickly responds
that book won?ft be in until the next day. He comments how Shigure
only gave him an adequate answer and that he would return the next
day for the book. Mayuko immediately tells him she will ship the
book to his house, but he insists he will come in person for it. She
calls his name as if to say something, but instead she changes her
mind.

Mayuko runs to the phone about to make a call to Shigure, but she
doesn?ft want to take a chance of having one of her students answer
it. ?gWhy doesn?ft that idiot carry a cell phone! I wanted to at
least say one complaint.?h She starts thinking how he?fs attitude is
still the same but notices how he didn?ft seem even a bit happy as
she had hoped him to be.

Hatori is back at the main house and he is approached by a woman who
is questioning of his whereabouts. Akito had been looking for him
and anxiously waiting for his return. She warns him not to leave
light-heartedly for emergencies knowing how Akito heavily relies on
him. She notices a woman consoling a boy crying in the yard and
comments how embarrassing of him to cry so loudly. Then she asks
Hatori to hurry up. Hatori walks away as he thinks of that crying
boy.

Back at Mayuko?fs parents?f bookshop the next day. Mayuko complains
how she didn?ft get hold of Shigure the day before. Her mother asks
why she won?ft marry him and she annoyingly responds that they had
broken up, but her mother continues on with the subject. Hatori
walks into the shop. As her mother wonders if he is her new lover,
Mayuko drags Hatori out of the shop. Poor Hatori has no clue what is
happening?c

Mayuko hands Hatori his new book as she notices he?fs not wearing a
suit. He tells her he tried to look comfortable for the weather for
her. She starts laughing and he wonders why. She answers that he?fs
so serious, but he says he?fs just going along with it. Then she
asks if he?fs doing all right. Hatori responds that there?fs nothing
wrong with his health. Mayuko explains he doesn?ft seem happy, but
he doesn?ft feel he would feel that kind of happiness. She gets very
upset and explains that she will refuse to believe in anything if he
can?ft be happy. Hatori is shocked to see Mayuko wailing in front of
him while they?fre being noticed by passersby. Scene of Mayuko
crying doubles with the image of the boy he saw at the main house.
He tells her she may be misunderstanding something and that he had
just wanted to make an excuse to come outside (run away) for a little
because he was tired. He continues that he may surprisingly feel
better by crying, but he?fs getting clumsier at it as he gets older.
Then he thanks her for crying in place of him. She is glad to be of
help for him, however she adds that he should have his girlfriend do
it for him instead. For a moment, he is clueless and responds he has
no girlfriend. Person Shigure mentioned, Satsuki-san, is Hiro?fs
mother and she is speechless when they both realizes Shigure had been
teasing her all along. While she is reacting furiously to this,
Hatori asks her out to eat for both an apology and a gratitude. She?f
s not thrilled to have him ask her out when he face is a mess, but
she does accept the invitation.

Shigure is at home on the phone telling someone he knew someone was
interested in her and that he was just helping her out a little.
?gFor now on, Mayu-chan will work on it by yourself, but who knows
how many years it will take with someone like Ha-san.?h ?gYour
persistent feelings for him lasted all this time so it should be
okay.?h We see Mayuko responding, ?gAt this point, even if takes 5 or
10 years?c?h ?gDon?ft call here anymore!?h and Shigure hangs up the
phone on her. There?fs a shot of Hatori?fs handkerchief on Mayuko?fs
desk.
